The scriptures reveal a multitude of names for God. The names that God has chosen to reveal Himself to us by in scripture give us a significant level of revelation into His person, His attributes and His character.
The names of God can be grouped into two groups; Creatorship (or Elohistic), and Redemptive (or Jehovahistic) names. We will also list the New Testament Names and Titles assigned to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Creatorship or Elohistic names of God are the names which involve God’s relationship with His creation. The name “El” means “to be strong, power and/or mighty.” “Elohim” is the plural of “El” and speaks to the plurality of divine Persons in the Godhead or Trinity.
The name “El” is frequently used as a compound name in scripture. It is most frequently associated with or used to reveal an attribute or power of God in relation to His creation.

The redemptive names of God revealed as Jehovah or Yahweh are God’s own personal and distinct names. The name Jehovah appears in the King James Version of the Bible about 6,823 times and is most frequently translated as “Lord”. The Hebrew people referred to this name as the unpronounceable or incommunicable name of God. There are four Hebrew letters in this name. The English letters are JHVH or YHWH. These are referred to as being the four letter tetragrammaton.
Jehovah is the “I AM THAT I AM”. This name signifies “to be” or “I will be all that I will be”. It reveals to us that God is Eternal, Unchanged, Unchanging and that He is all that He has ever needed to be. The redemptive compound names of Jehovah provide a source of great revelation concerning the person and nature of God. These compound names are almost always linked to a human need in scripture. Each of these compound names reveals how Jehovah meets all of our needs through His redemptive power. The ultimate revelation of the redemptive names of Jehovah is found in the name, “The Lord Jesus Christ.”
