At church last night (5/16/2012) the worship team lead us in a song that spoke about the blood of Jesus Christ. We sang about the power of the blood of Jesus and we sang about the blood of Jesus being our only way into a relationship with God. As we were singing I was moved at the awesome power of God’s love and mercy. There is nothing in this world as amazing as the grace of God. Jesus made a way for us at the cross. As believers we must keep the message of the cross at the forefront of our lives. We are saved by grace through faith because our Savior shed His blood for us at the cross.
I want to share briefly about the cross. I hope that this message is one that you know very well but if it is not I pray that it will impact your life in the same way it has mine.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV)
The message of the cross is the primary and fundamental message of the Christian faith. The message of the cross is the message of our faith because it was at the cross that the Lord Jesus Christ died in our place, paying the penalty for our sins; establishing a New Covenant that allows all who will believe to be free from the bondage of sin and death.
Like it or not, we all need a Savior
We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. (Isaiah 64:4 NLT)
We cannot earn our way to heaven. We cannot buy our way into heaven. There is no penance that can be paid. There are no pilgrimages that can be made. There is no divine scale of justice that will weigh our good deeds against our bad deeds to decide our worthiness before Almighty God. We are all separated from God because of sin. We are all guilty, having earned God’s judgment yet because of the cross we have all been offered His mercy.
All of our religious activities, all of our charitable endeavors and all of our attempts at righteous living are irrelevant in light of our sin and yet all of our sins can be cleansed by the power of His blood.
He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:10-12 NLT)
What we deserve and what He has done
One of the greatest obstacles for many in coming to Christ is the fact that we must all come to the place where we admit that we cannot save ourselves. We do not deserve heaven. We are not righteous. We are lost, fallen and sinful. We have earned wrath yet we are offered grace, mercy and forgiveness. We are not saved on our merits but we are saved because of the price that Jesus paid for us.
Only sinners need a Savior and in order to be saved we must each admit that we are sinners.
“I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” (Luke 5:32 NLT)
There are no perfect people. There are no deserving people. No one makes the cut and yet we have all been given the opportunity to come to God because of the cross.
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus. (Romans 3:23-26 NLT)
Jesus paid the price for me and he also paid the price for you. There is nothing left for Him to do. The door has been opened for us. His invitation for redemption has been issued. He has shed His blood for us. He has risen from the grave. He has ascended into heaven. He has poured out His Spirit on those have believed. His love is absolute – there are no barriers that remain between God and us. The only thing that remains necessary is for to repent and believe the gospel.
There are no more barriers
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39 NLT)
Our sins have been paid for. The death of Jesus at the cross removed every barrier between God and humanity. The only thing that can keep us separated from God is our unwillingness to accept His grace.
Your sins are not a valid reason to remain separated from God. Jesus paid for every sin at the cross.
The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that anyone and everyone who wants to come to God can do so. There is grace for all of us. There is mercy for all of us. There is forgiveness for all of us. Salvation is available to every person through Jesus Christ.
My sincere hope and prayer for you is that you will invite the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Savior. He loved each of us enough to sacrifice His life as payment for the penalty of sins so that we could know Him. I pray that you would experience the awesome gift of His grace and allow Him to change your life by the power of His Spirit.
