Today (5/30/2011) is Memorial Day here in the U.S. It is a day where we honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed to establish and defend the freedom that we enjoy as citizens of the United States.
The most appropriate response to sacrifice is gratitude. True gratitude extends far beyond the lip service of a simple “thank you” and causes a change in attitude, lifestyle and actions. The greatest Memorial we can make to those who have served and sacrificed to provide and protect that which we enjoy is to live lives of vigilant gratitude.
Why did they serve? What did they fight to protect us from? Who did they fight to liberate? What did they fight to keep us from losing? Let us remember, be thankful and remain vigilant.
The words of the Lord Jesus are the greatest testimony we can give on any Memorial Day.
This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:12-13)
